It turns out the threat to journalism is something bigger,” writes Chris Lau (<a href="http://www.blogs.itworld.com" target="_self">blogs.itworldcanada.com</a>). He concurs that there are unique values to blogging. The unique value, he says, is virtual interaction. “The interaction from readers through comments has generated further discussions. Blogging is therefore a modernised version of group message forums, but without moderator intervention or fixed subjects.”</span></span></p>

Google is valued far greater than some major newspaper companies in the U.S. They provide “content” without having paid anything. Profits are reached when revenue through advertising exceeds the cost of providing content. When the cost of content is zero, someone has to pay and the companies that bear the cost are those companies who pay their journalists.<span>  </span></span></span></p>

Books they say enable various practices, such as fiction, poetry, science and sometimes journalism, to be disseminated. Books however do not pose a threat to journalism. To the contrary, books, like blogs, increase interest in the subjects they cover and in this way promote further media consumption.</span></span></p>

The owner of the blog, Paul Bradshaw, agrees: “I think bloggers have been changing their work practices as they become more popular, and wish to improve what they do, and this means they have to seek ways of funding them to spend more time on it.”</span></span></p>

This new form of connection between media and consumer is called ‘social media’ and the value to media companies is now the infrastructure, or social entity created to facilitate interaction, not the physical newspaper or news broadcast (Bowman &amp; Willis, 2005)</span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">The first step is to adopt a new business model. Riley (2005) suggests that this new model must create a way for the industry to produce quality journalism, with a profit, in the digital world. If journalism is to exist, as we know it, media enterprises must find a model that uses the internet to add value to their organization. </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Riley (2006) illustrates some of the key principles (for newspapers) that must be adopted in shaping the future of online print. Although no one model will work for all companies, these guiding principles will help make the transition from print to online more beneficial. Riley suggests the following:</span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><em><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Adopt a new way of Thinking</span></span></em></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">There must be a switch from monologue type news to a more interactive conversation with their consumers. In traditional news, the control resided in the industry. With the introduction of Web 2.0 individuals now have a power to create and publish their own stories.</span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><em><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Don’t neglect one to the expense of the other</span></span></em></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">The transformation to online requires time and energy. This is therefore a good time to refresh the print side as well. The new business model that is to be adopted should include both online and offline. If the online presence is to have community news, then this should be emulated in print as well. This will create loyalty, and brand identity. </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><em><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></em></p>

<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">One advantage of the internet is that costs are relatively low. Therefore media can experiment and loose less if the experiment fails. The internet is about innovation and developing new strategies.</span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Managers need to realize that in order to remain profitable, they must transform their existing business model to one that incorporates new technologies and new revenue streams. Bowman and Willis (2005) point out that most managers of traditional media sources are not yet willing to except such principles, and this will lead to their demise. </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">In the traditional business model, value was created by the delivery of information. This can no longer be the way to think of value, and to survive, one must understand that the “value will come from creating an infrastructure for citizen participation and nurturing communities” (Bowman and Willis, 2005). </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">A sure way to create value is to use online news media, not simple as a copy of print (or so called shovelware) but as a complementary product to the original media source. </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Arial;">Organisations</span><span style="font-family:Arial;"> that simply put print online are not creating new value to consumers. By using online media as a complementary product, the</span><span style="font-family:Arial;"> organisation</span><span style="font-family:Arial;"> can create customer loyalty and assure brand recognition is being created both online and offline (Carlson, 2005). </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Sambrook, the director of the BBC, states that value has been created, not by owning the news, but by “making connections with and between different audiences.” (Bowman &amp; Willis, 2005). </span></span></p>

<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Most offer newsletters with news that broke after the print deadline. Others offer newsletters with breaking news. Many are finding ways to integrate the printed and electronic version. The mainstream South African media is well prepared for the challenges ahead.</span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">In my view newspapers have adopted well to the “blogging” threat and are standing strong. </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">And finally here’s something to think about:</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height:150%;margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Brayden Simms wrote for The Miami Herald’s Heavy Thrifting, a column about saving money, when recently the newspaper decided to take a tip on saving money and laid him (and many other employees) off.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Human interactivity is the difference between traditional news and online news in that the audience can participate through interpersonal communication.</span></span></p>

People who are comfortable on the net, she found, are also the same people that are more inclined to participate on the net. They are the people that generally read more (including traditional media). One can also assume that they are more media savvy. In other words they are the people that participate, are more involved and more interested in their surroundings. </span></span></p>

This relates back to the traditional role of the journalist which many can’t seem to shake off or adapt to.</span></span></p>

The online journalist’s first priority is to present to their readers the news as quickly as possible and with the restraint of limited resources often leave little time to actively engage with their readers.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Fact is that interactivity has become an integral part of online news. Readers aren’t content to be mere spectators anymore. They have become active participants that want their voices to be heard. As Chung points out quality journalism is crucial. In the internet age this rings even more true, where thousands of readers are quick to jump at any mistakes or to add their two cents worth.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Chang’s study brought little surprises. People who are comfortable on the net are also the ones that are more inclined to participate on the net. They are also the people that read more (traditional media). In other words they are the people that are more involved and more interested in their surroundings.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">Although Chang’s study has some inherent flaws as pointed out by the author herself she finds that to deliver quality news reporting to build credibility of the news organization and subsequently encourage audiences to actively participate in the online news is of critical importance.</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="font-size:small;">And although the study provides somewhat discouraging results to the initial enthusiasm about online news and the application of interactivity through the adoption of interactive features, news organisations that are sincerely interested in communicating with their news audiences should not discard their efforts in applying interactivity, she says.</span></span></p>

Many factors underpin these differences, including neurobiological structures and hormonal processes shaped by evolution, and global socialisation practices. Each plays a part in explaining why men and women drivers have very different records in relation to their tarmac manners.</span></span></span></p>

Boynton (2000: 29) believes that the borders between online and traditional media will become further blurred but that online journalism will supplement traditional mediums rather than replace them.</p>
<p>The future of online journalism very much depends on the development of technology and multimedia. As we know technology advances almost on a daily basis and whilst nobody is really sure what the future holds De Wold (2001) warns that the expansion of online journalism may also lead to some problems. Some of the problems can include ethical issues such as the relationship between a blogger, his employer, what he writes in the printed media, and how that compares with what he writes in cyberspace.</span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="background:white;line-height:18pt;margin:0 0 12pt;"><span style="color:black;" lang="EN"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Arial;">It is almost certain that new gadgets will be developed as technology improves (Boynton, 2000: 29). Some suggest the possible development of an electronic newspaper. This works through downloading news from a computer or phone line. The information then appears in a special grid between two sheets of plastic, where it could be viewed by the user.</p>

Online journalism will shift the focus of journalism from what it has been with traditional mediums to the new mediums. The new focus will now be on connecting to content and other information through hyperlinks and multimedia rather than the traditional packaging of content. This is a change from traditional media and will gradually determine the future of journalism as this shift in journalistic culture is further explored.</p>
<p>Millison in 2004 predicted that the medium will become more and more personalised for individual users. This has of course already happened in particular with the popularity of blogs. Blogs allow for more interaction between readers and provide immediate commentary on news events and other issues. </span></span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="font-family:Arial;"><span style="color:black;" lang="EN">There are many different attitudes regarding the challenges of the future and the progress online journalism will make. While the future is not completely clear, it is certain that the medium will continue to grow and prosper as technology improves and the medium is further understood and embraced.</p>
<p></span><span lang="EN-ZA">John V.Pavlik, executive director of The Center for New Media at Columbia University&#8217;s Graduate School of Journalism writes:</span></span></span></p>

Now stop imagining. It&#8217;s here: the Internet provides more news content than that every day, most of it free. So it&#8217;s not surprising that increasing numbers of the world&#8217;s forty million to fifty million Internet users are going online for their news.</span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span lang="EN-ZA"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Arial;"> </span></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span lang="EN-ZA"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Arial;">He goes on to say that the quality of some of the news online is as good as that at of leading newspapers or news magazines or TV or radio outlets. And the reason why? Because much of it comes from those media.</span></span></p>

In terms of journalism, what&#8217;s the point?”</span></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin:0;"><span lang="EN-ZA"><span style="font-size:small;font-family:Arial;">News organizations therefore know the look and feel as well as the quality of news is what will draw audiences for online news in the future.</span></span></p>
